E-media bookmarklet

What is the e-media bookmarklet?

A bookmarklet is a special bookmark in your browser. Unlike a normal bookmark, however, a bookmarklet does not link to another web page, but in this case performs authentication as an LMU member.

Example:
You want to access an article on the Springer Nature website and enter https://www.link.springer.com in your browser. Since you are not recognized as an LMU member, access remains blocked. In this case, click on the e-media bookmarklet. You will be asked to log in to the e-media login (unless you are already logged in), and the URL will then be automatically rewritten to https://link.springer.com.emedien.ub.uni-muenchen.de. You will now have access to the desired article, provided that the University Library has a license for it.

Create an e-media bookmarklet

  1. Drag the green "E-Media Bookmarklet" icon to the bookmarks bar of your browser.
  2. The bookmarklet has now been created.
  3. In future, the login process will start automatically after calling up an e-resource and clicking on the bookmarklet.

E-media bookmarklet

Create an e-media bookmarklet manually

On mobile devices or if your browser does not have a bookmarks bar, you must create the bookmarklet manually:

  1. Create a bookmark labeled "E-media bookmarklet".
  2. Copy the following address: javascript:if(location.href.indexOf('emedien')%20==%20-1)void(location.href='https://emedien.ub.uni-muenchen.de/login?url='+location.href)
  3. Open the edit menu for the new bookmark and paste the previously copied address into the URL field.

Restrictions

The e-media bookmarklet does not work with some publishers and providers of scientific literature. In these cases, you must first log in via the e-media login and then access the desired resource. This is the case with the database "Web of Science", for example.

Proxy prefix

What is the proxy prefix?

The proxy prefix is an addition to an internet address that enables access to licensed e-media from the University Library even outside the LMU campus network. The proxy prefix routes the request via the University Library server; you log in with your e-media login and gain access to the desired medium.

Create a link using proxy prefix

You put together the URL that authorizes you to access a resource yourself. To do this, you need the University Library's "proxy prefix". It is:

https://emedien.ub.uni-muenchen.de/login?url=

You attach the "normal" URL of the desired resource directly to this prefix. For example, the correct target address for the Springer Nature platform would be:

https://emedien.ub.uni-muenchen.de/login?url=http://www.springerlink.com

By using the proxy prefix, you now have access to all resources on the platform, provided they are licensed by the University Library.

Single sign-on (SSO) / Shibboleth

What is Shibboleth?

Shibboleth is a single sign-on system that gives LMU members access to licensed e-media, among other things. No user profile is created for the web services themselves. This means that you log in to LMU as an "identity provider," which transmits the completed login to the provider's website.

Detailed information about Shibboleth on the LRZ website

Log in with Shibboleth:

  • Open the desired provider website.
  • Search for institutional login
    • Some providers require two-step registration:
"Log in" / "Sign in" and "Log in via institution," do not enter your personal ID or email address.
    • Other providers have a direct link "Institutional Login" or "Log in via Shibboleth."
  • Select institution:
    • "LMU," "Munich," "Munich," or "Ludwig."
    • Select "Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich," "University Library (LMU)," or "University of Munich" from the list.
    • If a "Group," "Region," or "Federation" appears: Select "German Higher Education and Research (DFN-AAI)" and search for the appropriate entry for LMU.
  • Logging in to LMU:
You will now be taken to an LMU registration page. Log in here with your LMU user ID.
  • Back to the provider's website:
After successfully logging in, you will be redirected back to the provider's website. There, you will now be recognized as an LMU member and can access the full texts of the desired resources—provided that the LMU University Library has licensed access to the respective resources.
