DEAL contracts

LMU Munich participates in the Germany-wide DEAL agreements with the publishers Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley.

General information about the DEAL contracts
DEAL contracts are Germany-wide contracts with the three largest scientific publishers Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley. These contracts give LMU members electronic access to almost all of these publishers' journals and the option to publish research results in open access.

The agreements include:

Read access to hybrid journals from the respective publisher (“Reading”)

Hybrid journals are defined as subscription-based journals, i.e., journals that require a paid subscription, in which individual articles - especially those by authors from institutions that have joined the DEAL contract - are freely accessible as open access publications.

Publishing in hybrid journals (“Publishing”)

Corresponding authors at LMU can publish their research articles in DEAL subscription journals (“hybrid journals”) in open access.
The respective publisher charges LMU a publish-and-read fee (PAR fee) for publishing and reading. This fee is divided among the departments based on the number of publications and offset against the departments' basic allocation (advance deduction). If authors decide against open access publication in individual cases (opt-out), this does not change the costs.

Publishing in gold open access journals

The DEAL contracts enable the publication of scientific articles in the genuine (“gold”) open access journals of the participating publishers. The publishers charge APC (article processing charges) for this, with a discount on the list price being granted under the DEAL contract. Invoicing takes place after publication via the University Library. If the funding requirements for the LMU Open Access Fund are met, the funding amount is automatically included in the invoice.
