On December 21, 1973, the state parliament of Bavaria passed the first Bavarian Higher Education Act, which came into force on October 1, 1974, 50 years ago. The Act covered the dual legal nature of universities as corporations and state institutions, the development of higher education in accordance with development plans, the transition from a rectorate to a presidential system, the reorganization of faculties into departments, the revision of study and examination regulations and administrative law, and finally the participation of students.

The Bavarian Higher Education Act brought about profound changes for all universities in the Free State, the effects of which are still felt today. The special exhibition approaches the topic in the following eleven sequences:

  • The Bavarian Higher Education Act of 1974
  • Higher education law at LMU Munich before 1974
  • Student protests against the Bavarian Higher Education Act
  • Nikolaus Lobkowicz – last rector, first president
  • The old faculties
  • A development plan for the faculty structure
  • Growth of LMU in the city of Munich
  • The plan for a data handbook for the faculties
  • The abolition of university parishes
  • LMU Munich presents itself at its 500th anniversary celebration in 1972
  • The Großhadern Clinic – a mammoth project
