For 80 years, LMU’s main building has been located at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, which—like other streets and squares in Munich—was named after members of the White Rose. The practice of honoring victims of the Nazi regime and members of the resistance by naming streets and squares was intended to symbolize Munich’s political reorientation and its break with Nazism.
The political and social debates about how to deal with the legacy of National Socialism, acts of honor, and the culture of remembrance immediately after the end of the war are the central themes of the exhibition. Curated by LMU students under the guidance of historian Constanze Jeitler, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the city map as a mirror of historical debates and current struggles over interpretation. For although as early as June 1945, Munich citizens proposed dedicating the squares in front of Ludwig Maximilian University to the Scholl siblings and Prof. Kurt Huber, streets in Munich are still named today after figures associated with anti-Semitism and colonialism.
The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History, the White Rose Foundation e.V., and the City Archives of the State Capital of Munich.
