„Wann du ein Roß anfahen wilt in die Chur zu nehmen / so bedencke dich recht unnd wol / daß du deine Sachen also anstellest / damit du nicht in einem oder dem andern zu viel / oder zu wenig thust."

These words open the therapeutic section of the work by the 17th-century equine physician Martin Böhme. He worked during the era of the Stallmeister (1250–1762), a period spanning nearly 500 years that preceded the advent of modern veterinary education. During this time, so-called Stallmeister were responsible for maintaining the health of the horse herds. They passed their knowledge on to the next generation.

From April 20 to October 18, 2026, you can once again look over their shoulders in the exhibition “Looking Over the Stable Master’s Shoulder: Instruments from the LMU Munich Collection of Veterinary History” and be transported back to their everyday lives. The LMU Munich Collection of Veterinary History is showcasing selected treasures from its otherwise well-guarded repository.
