Exhibition “Renamed: Street Names and the Culture of Remembrance in Munich after 1945”

For 80 years, LMU’s main building has been located at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, which, like other streets and squares in Munich, was named after members of the White Rose. The practice of honoring victims of the Nazi regime and members of the resistance by naming streets and squares was intended to symbolize the political reordering and the rejection of National Socialism in Munich.

The political and social debates regarding how to deal with the legacy of National Socialism, commemorations, and the culture of remembrance immediately after the end of the war are the central themes of the exhibition. Curated by LMU students under the guidance of historian Constanze Jeitler, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the city map as a mirror of historical debates and current struggles over interpretation.

In cooperation with the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History, the White Rose Foundation, and the City Archives of the State Capital of Munich.

• Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
