Freedom! To mark the 175th anniversary of the 1848/49 revolution, the University Library is dedicating an exhibition to exhibits from the Schauss Collection.
The collection, formerly owned by Georg Anton Ritter von Schauss (1800-1876), contains a wealth of contemporary sources on the 1848/49 revolution. The lawyer and Freemason was a member of the Landsberg faction of the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848/49 and voted against the election of Frederick William IV as emperor. In 1854, King Maximilian II awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown, thereby elevating him to personal nobility. From 1859 to 1864, he served as Greek consul in Munich.
Various documents from the collection relating to the revolutionary events will be on display. In addition to a manuscript by Schauss, the exhibits include caricatures, lithographs, and newspaper articles that illustrate the 1848 revolution. The exhibition is supplemented by objects from the university archives that highlight the connection between Schauss, the revolution, and the university.
