Carl Georg von Maassen (1880–1940) led the artistic and intellectual life of a dandy modeled on E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776–1822), while at the same time being extremely conservative in his political views. He published scientific works as well as poetry. After losing his fortune, he had to earn money, but he rarely managed to motivate himself to work and instead devoted himself to his private library of rare books and his love affairs. The cabinet exhibition “Carl Georg von Maassen – A Dandy Straight Out of a Book,” curated by Katharina Schweigart, on the third floor of the LMU University Library illustrates the exciting personality of the writer and bon vivant in the context of his time. The library and estate are located in the University Library.
